Kamlesh Kumari Biography

Kamlesh Kumari Yadav was an Indian constable who lost her life on 13 December 2001 during the 2001 Indian Parliament attack by Pakistani terrorists. Yadav was the first to spot the terrorists and successfully raised the alarm though she was shot dead. She died on the spot. But her timely attempt to prevent terrorist gunmen and a terrorist suicide bomber from reaching Parliament was well appreciated and honoured. She was conferred with Ashok Chakra, India's highest peacetime military decoration awarded for courageous action or self-sacrifice. She is one among the rare females who has been honoured with this award.

She joined the CPRF in 1994 and was first posted in Rapid Action Force (RAF) in Allahabad. She was posted at the 88 Mahila Battalion on 12 July 2001. She became a member of group posted by Bravo Company, who serves as the security of Indian Parliament when parliament sessions are conducted. She was posted at Iron Gate No. 1, next to Building Gate No. 11. She was on duty at Parliament House on December 13 when five terrorists entered the house. They drove in a white Ambassador car that tried to storm the building.

When she tried to stop them by closing the gate she was shot dead. She died on the spot. But she managed to raise the alarm which helped the security to get attention and very soon all the terrorists were shot dead. Her alarm prevented a suicide bomber from detonating, thus saving many lives. She died defending the Parliament in the 2001 terrorist attack, for which she was awarded Ashok Chakra posthumously. The award was accepted in the Republic Day Parade by her husband, B P Yadav.
