Kalairani Biography

Kalairani is a noted actress associated with Tamil cinema. She is best known for playing supporting roles on big screen. She is a very familiar and popular face among Tamil audience. She became a thorough professional with the movie Anandhapurathu Veedu (1995). She is also a regular performer in Koothu-P-Pattarai dramas. She started with uncredited roles in Tamil movies in 1987, and moved to noted character roles in the second half of 1990s. Since then she is quite regular on celluloid. 2005 Tamil movie Kodambakkam earned her Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Female Character Artiste. As of now she has done more than 50 character roles.

She has unconventional looks and an avant garde histrionic style. But she is definitely an actress of substance when it comes to power packed performances. S. S. Kalairani has earned fame both as a film and stage artist. She was an avid cinema buff since young. She showed promise as an artist at an early age, and used to mimic Tamil actors like MGR, Nagesh etc. Her talent was spotted by her parents. They sent her to the Film Institute, Chennai. Though Kalai wanted to study editing, she enrolled for the acting course.

When she was out of college, she was not confident enough to try her luck in films. With doubts about her film career, she decided to study at the Adyar Music college and completed a course in Cosmetology. It was her friend, actor Nasser who convinced her to join films. He also suggested her to do theatre first. Kalai made her debut with "Kattiyakaran", written by Na Muthusamy, a play which went for the South Zone festival. She was quite regular in stage plays in 1980s before she joined film industry. As a film actress she was most recently seen in Thamizh Padam 2.
