Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri Biography

Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri is an Indian lyricist, music director and singer who is well versed in Carnatic music. He is popularly called Kaithapram and concentrates in Malayalam language works. He entered the film industry in 1985.

He was born in Kaithapram village near Payyanur in Kannur district of North Malabar region of Kerala. His grandfather taught him Vedas and then he was tutored by teachers like Parassi Thamburan and SVS Panicker. He completed his studies in acting and music from Natyagruha. His father’s name is Keshavan Namboothiri and he was popularly called Kannadi Bhagavathar.

He married Devi Antharjanam and has two children Deepankuran and Devadarshan. His elder son Deepankuran is a singer and has sung many film songs and devotional songs. His younger brother Kaithapram Viswanathan Namboothiri is a music director in Malayalam film industry and also runs the music school at Payyanur named Sruthilaya Music School.

Kaithapram entered into the film industry as a lyricist and his debut song was Devadundubhi Sandralayam in the film Ennannum Kannettante. After that he got chances to write lyrics for many films and he has worked for more than 330 films. He also has acted in some films like Swathithirunal, Theerthadanam, His Highness Abdulla, etc. In many of the films he has acted, he has performed the role of the classical singer.

His works include both prose and poems and his books are widely accepted. He used to express deep love and regard through his lyrics. He also has sung many songs in the public concerts for various causes. His works have won many awards and honors.

He serves as the Managing Trustee of Swathithirunal Kala Kendram at Kozhikode where more than 400 students are taught music. He also founded the Music Therapy Foundation through which he promotes the therapeutic value of music. He conducts therapy sessions all over Kerala.

Some of the films for which he wrote lyrics include Venicile Vyapari, Urumi, Pokkiri Raja, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, Yugapurushan, Pulliman, Bodyguard, Puthiya Mukham, Madhya Venal, Devadoothan, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Ishtam, Uthaman, Kalyanaraman, Kannaki, Pranayamanithooval, Agnisakshi, Veendum Chila Veettukaryangal, Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal, Amaram, His Highness Abdullah, Kuttettan, Paavam Paavam Rajakumaran, etc.
