Kaderbad Narasinga Rao Biography

Kaderbad Narasinga Rao was a freedom fighter, social reformer and philanthropist from Andhra Pradesh. He was also a social worker, activist and politician who stood against social evils like untouchability, and worked for the disabled and poor. He lived during the period, 14 November 1888 – 2 June 1963. He also gave his land for the construction of a mosque and also established a hostel for the Harijan girls. He supported education for all, and took part in many social reforms during that period.

 

Kaderbad Narasinga Rao was born on 14 November 1888 in Nandyal, Madras Presidency as the son of Kaderbad Venkata Subbarao and Narasamma. He had six brothers and two sisters. He belonged to a traditional Hindu Brahmin family. After schooling, he enrolled at Madras Christian College in Chennai to pursue graduation. However influenced by the nationalist movement by Mahatma Gandhi, he discontinued his studies and joined freedom struggle movement. He also joined politics very soon.

 

Though he belonged to a traditional Brahmin family, he worked against social evils such as discrimination based on caste, untouchability etc. He tried to integrate society into a single unit and erase the classes in between. He wanted to provide economic opportunities for poor and equal social status for all. His progressive thinking irked many belonging to his community who strongly disapproved him.

 

He participated in functions where he ate along with lower sectors of the society. He realized the need of education for the lower sections and also understood how poverty and social struggles stand as hindrances to development. He, along with his friend Gadicherla Harisarvottama Rao started the Library Movement. They established the "Edward Corporation Library in Nandyal which is currently called "Victoria Reading Room". He even donated his land for this purpose.
