K. Rajeshwar Biography

K. Rajeshwar is a noted screenwriter and film director associated with Tamil cinema. He started his film career in the late 1970s, and was best known for his association with actor Pratap Pothan in those days. As an assistant scriptwriter in the film industry, he started his career in the late 1970s. His debut film as a director, Nyaya Tharasu released in 1989 won Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Third Best Film. After that he directed seven more Tamil films. Apart from scripting his films, he writes screenplays for other film directors too. He also co-scripted Bollywood super hit film, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani aside its director Rajkumar Santoshi in 2008. The movie was well appreciated by critics and audience.

 

K. Rajeshwar is of Tamil origin. Yet he was brought up in Mumbai, where his father ran business. He later schooled in Tirunelveli, and finally settled at Chennai where he completed his higher studies. Since college days he was actively involved in writing scripts for plays and skits. His passion towards cinema brought him to Adyar Film Institute. Rajeshwar started his career as co-scriptwriter under the name Somasundareshwar. He co-scripted Aval Appadithan (1978) aside its director C. Rudhraiya. The movie starring Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan opened to critical acclaim, and bagged him more offers. Since then he co-scripted many movies, before he made his first film in 1989.

 

He went on to write the scripts of commercial hits of 1980s such as Panneer Pushpangal (1981), Kadalora Kavithaigal (1986) and Solla Thudikuthu Manasu (1988). There was one film director with name Somasundar during the same period, and as insisted by Bharathiraja, he changed his screen name to Rajeshwar. In 1989, he scripted the critically acclaimed Vetri Vizha starring Kamal Hassan, following which he made his directorial debut. A remake of the Malayalam film Panchagni, his debut flick Nyaya Tharasu earned him critical acclaim. Kovilpatti Veeralakshmi, Athey Manithan, Amaran etc are some of his movies later.
