K. A. Thangavelu Biography

K. A. Thangavelu was a popular comedian of Tamil cinema who was active in the golden era of Indian cinema. He worked in the industry from early 1950s to 1980s till he took retirement from the industry. He doesn’t belong to the same genre of comedians during this period - J. P. Chandrababu and Nagesh. Rather he was known for his distinguished style for his impeccable timing in verbal agility and the characteristic twang of his delivery. A phony writer Bhairavan in the movie Kalyana Parisu is regarded as his best role onscreen.

He was frequently paired with actress M. Saroja, whom he married later. Saroja has been the popular female comedian of Tamil cinema then. One of the most successful pairs on Tamil screen, the couple tied the knot after getting paired in more than 50 films. They got married in Madurai at the Murugan temple during the 100th day celebrations of Kalyana Parisu, the movie regarded as Thangavelu’s masterpiece. Both played husband and wife in the movie. The duo had later on acted in more than 250 films together. She fondly used to address Thangavelu as CAT. She passed away in 2012, almost two decades after his death. Both these actors were committed to theatre also.

He was fondly called "Danaal Thangavelu" and he was born on 15 January 1917 in Karaikal, Tamil Nadu. He was associated with theater before he forayed to movies. Made his debut in the early 1950s with the film – Singari (1951), through his distinct style and dialogue delivery he created a niche of his own. His style was quite different from his contemporaries and has given many memorable roles onscreen aside his most successful co-star M. Saroja. From 1974 till 1994, the year he passed away, he was associated with Raadhu’s theatre troupe.
