Jyoti Sarup Biography

Jyoti Sarup is film maker and television producer. He has directed both movies as well as television serials. He is popularly known as the director of Doordarshan serial Buniyaad telecasted during 1980’s. This serial was very popular during those days. As a film director, his noted movies are Chorni (1982) and Bub (2001). He is an engineer by education but later took diploma in actinf from NSD and FTII. He started off as a Chief Assistant Director to Ramanand Sagar known for epic serials like Ramayana for Doordarshan. In 2001, he received Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration for the Kashmiri film Bub. His telefim, Tadap won Bombay Films Award for the best telefilm in 1986. He has also directed comedy serial, Guldasta for Doordarshan during 1980’s.

Sarop was born on 20 August 1954 in New Delhi. After taking an engineering degree, his passion to entertainment industry prompted him to join NSD and FTII later. He took diploma in acting from both. In 1978 he reached Mumbai to become an actor and became the assistant director of Ramanand sagar, Shakti Samanta and Atma Ram. He appeared in a few films and serials as well. But later he identified himself as a man behind camera. His break as an individual director came from a telefilm with Shekhar Suman. Later he directed Inspector Navin Mohan in which he appeared as an actor too, followed by Tele film Sandhya Chayya.

His work in Sandhya Chayya was appreciated and thus he got the big break in the form of television serial, Buniyad. Later he directed 38 projects including National award winning movie, Bulb, thus becoming the first artist to win a National award for Kashmiri movie. He has also published a few books on cinema and edited the 96 minutes long Oscar winning film, An Inconvenient Truth to 36 minutes, for Indian audiences.
