Joy Sengupta Biography

Joy Sengupta is a popular character artist associated with Bollywood and Bengali cinema. He is a noted theatre artist who started doing stage shows since college days.  He is best known for his debut feature film, Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa (1998) directed by Govind Nihalani which won several awards. He also acted in Govind Nihalani’s Deham. Good Boy Bad Boy (2007), Shakal Pe Mat Ja (2011), Hate Story (2012), Aladin (2009) and Shakal Pe Mat Ja (2011) are some of Bollywood movies. As a theatre artist he has worked with stalwarts of theatre like Habib Tanvir, Safdar Hashmi, Barry John, Feroz Abbas Khan, Ramu Ramanathan and Lillete Dubey.

He was born in Kolkata and raised in Delhi. He was born on 14th December, 1974. He has always been attracted to art and culture and theater has been his first love. He started doing plays since college days. As an actor he always accepted artistic challenges and there was no turning back after that. He also loved teaching. He was associated with Jana Natya Manch in those days. Since he was known into the theatric circles, he received a few tele-film offers which he accepted. As television offered good exposure and payment, he opted for television roles. Yet he didn’t break his relationship with theater and also taught acting.

While he was busy with television, he happened to meet Govind Nihalani, who offered him the first film role - Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa in 1998. Later he worked in a few Bengali movies, apart from Bollywood films, theater work and television. Yet he feels theatre artists are always respected, as an actor gets a live reaction from the audience. He holds a Diploma in Drama from the Living Theatre Academy, New Delhi.
