Jitu Rai Biography

Jitu Rai is an Indian shooter of Nepali origin. He currently ranks at 3 in 10 metre air pistol and 4 in 50 metre pistol, and one of the leafing Indian shooters of present scene. In 2016, he received the most prestigious Khel ratna, awarded by government of India for the contributions towards the field of posts. In 2014, at the ISSF World Cup in Munich, he won the silver medal in the 10 metre air pistol event, and in Maribor, Rai won two medals - a silver in the 50 metre pistol event and a gold in the 10 metre air pistol event. Following these outstanding achievements, he was ranked number 1 in the world, in 10 metre air pistol and number 4, in 50 metre pistol, in July 2014. He has scored 2 golds in common wealth games.

 

At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Rai created the Games record in the qualification round of the 50 metre pistol event, and won gold medal for his country. His score of 194.1 points was another game record. In the 2014 Asian Games held at Incheon in South Korea, Jitu won the gold medal in the 50 m pistol category, and also a bronze in the men's 10 m air pistol team event. In 2016, he won a silver medal at the ISSF World Cup held in Baku in the 10m Air Pistol event. In 2016 Rio Olympics, he made a remarkable comeback and reached finals, though couldn’t win any medals. At 2018 Commonwealth Games, he won gold in men's 10m air pistol with a total score of 235.1 points, and a new record in the games.

 

He was born in Nepal on 26 August 1987. Sankhuwasabha is his hometown. Currently he is settled in India, and his nationality is Indian. He is a Naib Subedar in the 11 Gorkha Rifles of Indian Army. He moved to India in 2006 to be a part of Indian military. In 2011 national games, he played for UP, and after that he became fully active in his field.
