He was appointed as the Peedathipathi by his predecessor Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati Swamigal. It was he who gave him the title of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi on 22nd March 1954. He is involved in various controversies and is one of the leading controversial religious figures in Hinduism.

He has profound knowledge and his sacerdotal office has won him wide respect all over India. He is respected much in the Hindu Brahmin circles. He had an important role in shaping Kanchi Math as the strong organization. Due to his efforts, Kanchi Matt is patronized by many NRIs, and politicians. There are many schools, clinics and hospitals run by Kanchi Mutt. This has established Shankara Nethralaya in Chennai and in Guwahati in Assam. Also it runs the Children’s Hospital, Hindu Mission Hospital and Tamil Nadu Hospital.

He was made as the Kanchi Kamakoti Pitadipati on 3rd January 1994. He was succeeded by Sri Sankara Vijayendra Jayendra Saraswathi.

Jayendra Saraswathi was arrested on 11th November 2004 and was charged for having a hand in the conspiracy in murdering the manager of the temple, Sankararaman. He was refused bail three times from the lower courts. But still he managed to get it from the Supreme Court of India on 10th January 2005. The case is there for more than six years and is still pending. The case has been transferred to the Union Territory of Pondicherry.

The arrest of Shankaracharya attracted the media. After the successive verdicts of the High Courts in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and the Supreme Court of India, the interest of the media decreased. The key witnesses turned against the case in 2010 saying that the police had forced them to utter lie against Sankaracharya and his disciple Vijayendra.
