Jay Om Prakash Biography

Jay Om Prakash, also called J. Om Prakash is an Indian film producer and director associated with Bollywood. He was most active in the era of 1960s and 1970s and has directed many notable movies such as Rajesh Khanna-Mumtaaz starrer Aap Ki Kasam (1974) and Jitendra starrer Aasha (1980). Though Aap Ki Kasam met with commercial failure, the movie is regarded as a classic. Jay Om Prakash’s daughter Pinky is married to noted film actor-director Rakesh Roshan. Thus popular film star Hrithik Roshan is his grandson. Om Prakash has also produced many blockbusters in the 1960s - Aaye Din Bahar Ke (1966) and Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke (1969). He produced the film - Aandhi in the 1970s, quite known for its controversial subject and was banned by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during Emergency period.

 

Known as a popular producer and director, his film titles start with English alphabet ‘A’, Bhagwaan Dada being an exception. His grandson Hrithik Roshan was seen in a child artist role in the film. Like Om Prakash, his son-in-law’s son’s film titles always begin with alphabet ‘K’, and most of them have been blockbusters. He has produced/directed many films for his son-in-law, Bhagwaan Dada being one of the major successes. Jay Om Prakash was active in the film industry till early 1990s and his last film Afsana Dilwalon Ka was released in 2001; one year after Hrithik Roshan made his film debut.

 

He was born on January 24, 1926 in Rawalpindi of present day Pakistan. He started his career in films in the early 1960s as a film producer. He produced many notable Hindi films in the 1960s. Aas Ka Panchhi (1961), Ayee Milan Ki Bela (1964), Aaye Din Bahar Ke (1966), Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke (1969), Aankhon Aankhon Mein (1972), Arpan (1983), Aakhir Kyon? (1985), Aap Ke Saath (1986) etc are some of his noted production ventures. Aap Ki Kasam in 1974 pairing the star Jodi - Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz marked his directorial debut. The film met with moderate success at box office, but positive reviews from critics, a period when Rajesh Khanna’s career had started declining and Mumtaz too retired from films post marriage.
