Jamuna Biography

Jamuna is a popular south Indian actress of 1950’s and 1960’s and she has appeared in a few Hindi movies as well. After cine experience for 30 years as a heroine, she joined politics. Earlier she was associated with Indian national Congress and has been elected to Parliament too. Now she is associated with BJP. She has acted in 198 movies belonging to Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Hindi languages. She received Filmfare award for best supporting role in Sunil Dutt-Nutan starrer Milan in 1967. She had already played the same role in its Telugu version - Mooga Manasulu released in 1963.

 

Jamuna was born in Hampi, Karnataka in 1936 to a business family. Her childhood days were spent at Duggirala of Guntur District. It was actress Saviri who lived at Jamuna’s residence who encouraged her to join the field of acting. Savitri was a theater artist then. Since school days she participated in dramas and made her film entry as a heroine at the age of 14. She learnt vocal music and harmonium from her mother. 1952 movie, Puttillu marked her career as a lead actress. Dr. Rajarao watched her stage show Maa Bhoomi and impressed by her acting skills, she was given the magic debut to movies. In 1965 she married Professor Juluri Ramana Rao, a Zoology professor in Osmania University and the couple had two children.

 

She established Telugu artist association and got associated with politics and Indian National Congress in the 1980’s. In the 1990’s she switched on to Bharatiya Janata Party. In 2008 she was honoured with NTR National Award for her contributions to Indian cinema.
