Ishwarlal (actor) Biography

Ishwarlal was a film actor, singer and filmmaker associated with Black and White era of Hindi talkies. He has portrayed lead roles in the early part of his career and with 1950s and 1960s, he mostly registered supporting roles. As an actor he is best remembered for portraying the negative role of a person who hates every ugly thing in Meri Surat Teri Aankhein. His role as a rich father in the movie who rejects his new born son because he was ugly and black is quite memorable. He has been associated with Hindi cinema since the days of early talkies in the 1930s.

 

He was also a director and producer, who was active in the industry from 1930 to 1966. He also earned name as a playback singer who rendered his voice for 14 films. He acted in 86 films and directed 11. He passed away on 22 January 1969 in Mumbai. As a character artist he is best known for the movies - Jawan Mard (1966),Meri Surat Teri Ankhen(1963) and Jevi Chhun Tevi(1963), all of them released towards the end of his career.

 

Ishwarlal marked his entry in Hindi cinema in early 1930s. Some of his early releases as an actor are Ummeed (1941), Holi (1940), Keemti Aansoo (1935) etc, which are regarded as his major releases. Mahasati Tulsi Vrinda, Sati Narmada, Jai Shankar, Matrubhumi, Heera, Gopi Chand etc are some of the films he directed. As a singer his voice was first used for 1938 film, Billi, followed by Aaj Ka Hindustan, Ummeed, Fariyaad, Bansari, Badi Maa, Chandni etc, and most of them were released in 1940s.
