Ishita Malaviya Biography

Ishita Malaviya is an Indian surfer from Manipa, Karnataka. She is India's first professional female surfer. She currently runs a surf club named the Shaka Surf Club as well as a camp called Camp Namaloha in Coastal Karnataka. Her aim is to promote the Indian coastline as an international surfing destination. She is the only Indian to be appointed as a brand ambassador for Roxy surfwear, and she became its brand ambassador in 2014. Same year a documentary film was made on the basis of surfer’s life titled Beyond The Surface.

 

Ishita Malaviya was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra. She studied journalism at Manipal University, Manipal. For a country with 7515 km long coastline, surprisingly she is the first female surfer. During her childhood days she was never involved with sports, and hence to become a surfer was never even in her wildest dreams. Once she along with her high school friend and boyfriend Tushar Pathiyan happened to meet a group of surfers from California in a small coastal village of Karnataka called Mulki. They who introduced as Surfing Swamis agreed to teach them surfing and it was her first stint with surfing. After this experience she decided to pursue it as her profession.  

 

During her college days she was interested in writing, and she thought she might become a writer or journalist. But she decided that she is going to do surfing for the rest of her life. A the age of 2, she along with boyfriend Tushar Pathiyan started the surf club from the village of Kodi Bengre, located on the Konkan Coast. She is currently settled in Karnataka. She was picked by popular beachwear brand Roxy to be part of their Spring/Summer 2013 campaign, a first for any Indian athlete, and after that she is known to the outer world.
