Irungbam Surkumar Singh hails from Imphal, Manipal and was born on 21 March 1983. He signed his first professional contract with East Bengal in 2000, and has been fully active in the sport for more than a decade. He played as a right back for his team during his initial days. After his debut season with East Bengal, he joined Mahindra United, and played for 2 years. He alternatively played for these two clubs in the coming years till 2009, before he signed the elite Bengal club, Mohun Bagan in 2009. During 2013-2014 season, he played for Mumbai Tigers. Currently he plays for United Sikkim F.C.

At the age of just 13, he impressed the scouts at the Tata Football Academy at the under-16 level, to such an extent that he was retained in the academy for four long years as a centre back. This dual-role helped him eventually in his successful career with the Indian national team. Though he played as a center back in TFA, after signing his first professional contract with East Bengal, he was turned into a right back by then-East Bengal coach Syed Nayemuddin. He played a key role in East Bengal’s first ever National League title.
