Hema Chaudhary Biography

Hema Chaudhary is a south Indian film actress who predominantly works in Kannada movies. She has also acted in about 150 films which include Telugu, Malayalam and Tamil languages too. She played both lead roles and character roles and is one of the popular character artists of south Indian cinema. Hema is also an accomplished Kuchipudi dancer who has done over 700 shows across the globe. Manmatha Leelai (1976) opposite actor Kamal Haasan is her most noticed Tamil film. Kannada films - Subhashaya (1977) and Gaali Maathu (1981) are noted for her negative roles. She played lead roles in the 1970s and early 1980s and later moved to character roles.

 

Hema was born in Andhra Pradesh in the year 1955 into a family with filmy background. Her mother Brundavan Chaudhary was a famous Dubbing artist. Interested in acting she joined an acting course Chennai Film Institute. 1976 film Pelli Kani Pelli directed by Adhiraj Anand Mohan marked her film debut. She played lead role opposite Sridhar. Very soon she established as a leading actress of Telugu cinema and some of her successful movies as a heroine include - Bangaru Manishi, Nijam, Kotta Alludu and Premayanam. Very soon she debut in other regional languages as well. She played one of the female leads of Kamal Hassan’s blockbuster hit - Manmatha Leelai.

 

Vijaya Vani (1977) was her debut Kannada film while she played the grey shaded character role "Kanaka" in Gaali Maathu (1981) which shot her to instant fame. From there on, she portrayed some terrific character roles onscreen. She presents a silk sari to a goddess temple every time she completes one movie. She is continuing this tradition since last 30 years. She is a jury member of National Film Awards Committee since 2013.
