Hamsalekha Biography

Hamsalekha is a music director, lyricist, screen writer and dialogue writer in the Kannada film industry. He has composed music and written lyrics for more than 300 movies. He has also composed for Tamil and Telugu films. Through Premlogha released in 1987, he became an iconic figure. His wife, Latha is a popular playback singer. He includes both western and Hindustani tunes in his compositions. He is a musician, expert in keyboards, guitar, piano, harmonium, and percussion. He occasionally sings as well. In 1995, he received National Film Award for Best Music Direction for the movie, Ganayogi Panchakshari Gavayi.

 

Hamsalekha’s real name is Govindaraju Gangaraju. He was born in Mysore on June 23, 1951. He was introduced into feature films by director M. N. Prasad. As a lyricist his debut movie was Triveni and as a composer, his first movie was Rahuchandra (1981). He has written the stories of the movies - Avane Nanna Ganda, Shaapa, Gandharva and Nalla thangi. His screenplays are Gandharva and Nimmaji. He has also written dialogues of a few films including – Gandharva, Premaloka and Avane Nanna Ganda.

 

He has received Filmfare Award for Best Music Director (Kannada) six times for the movies – Nenapirali, Preethse, Yaare Neenu Cheluve, Halunda Tavaru, Aakasmika and Ramachaari. He has received Karnataka state awards four times for music direction. The movies are – Nenapirali, Hrudaya Hrudaya, Taayi Illada Tavaru and Halunda Tavaru. As a lyricist he has won the awards thrice - Sri Manjunatha, Tutta Mutta? And Thayi Illada Tavaru.

 

He has received numerous awards throughout his career. Rajyostava Award in 2005, Dr. Rajkumar Award from Karnataka State Government in 2012, Kempegowda Prashasti in 2005 and Udaya film award for the best lyrics – Nenapirali (2005) are other awards for a special note. Hamsalekha Desi Vidya Samsthe was established in 2004–2005 as a free educational institution for SC/ST and underprivileged children of High school group. He also teaches music for students.
