Gurvinder Singh Biography

Gurvinder Singh is an Indian film director who predominantly works in Punjabi movies. He is best known for the Punjabi film, Anhe Ghore Da Daan which won National award for best direction in 2011. The movie also received National award for best regional film in Punjabi language. The movie was his maiden Punjabi feature film too. Apart from this Punjabi movie, he has directed some documentaries and short films, mostly in English. Pala, Passage, A winter tale and Legs Above my Feet need mention.

 

He is a graduate of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune who belongs to the alumni 2001. Then he started his career with a few short films and music videos. He has worked with   Rabbi Shergill and Jasbir Jassi for many Punjabi pop songs, most notably Jugni.  He received grants from IFA for audio-video documentation of the folk balladeering traditions of Punjab. His documentary work was titled PALA. A winter tale – is an account of 6 days he spent at his maternal grandmother’s house in Delhi. Legs Above my Feet is an experimental narrative of a conversation with young Kathak dancer Sushmita Ghosh.

 

He assisted renowned filmmaker Mani Kaul in conducting a workshop for film students at FTII, in 2005. The following year he assisted French filmmaker and writer, Chapour Haghighat, for the movie, ‘The Firmland’ shot in Mumbai. He curated a film festival “Imagem dos Povos” showcasing Indian cinema in Brazil in 2006. However his debut Punjabi movie, Anhe Ghore Da Daan (2011) proved to be the real breakthrough of his career. This movie, set in a village is based on a novel written by Gurdial Singh with the same name.
