Guru Somasundaram Biography

Guru Somasundaram is a character artist associated with Tamil cinema, who shot to fame with his debut film - Aaranya Kaandam (2011) directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, where he wowed the audience with the character of  Kaalayan. It was a gangster film, where he shared screen space with Jackie Shroff, Ravi Krishna and Sampath Raj. Associated with both commercial and offbeat movies - Pandiya Naadu (2013) and Jigarthanda (2014) are his best performances later, where he portrayed the character roles of Sivakumar's brother Nagaraj and Muthu respectively.

 

Guru Somasundaram was born and brought up in Chennai. He was associated with the prominent Tamil theatre group Koothu-P-Pattarai, for nearly a decade from 2002 to 2011. He was spotted by the director Thiagarajan Kumararaja during one of such occasions and gave him the role of Kaalayan in his debut flick - Aaranya Kaandam. He was playing the role of Chandrahari in Koothupattarai’s play by the same name. dialogues were written the way Guru performed in Chandrahari. Guru lost around 6-7 kilos of weight and grew a ‘Ma Po Si’ moustache for the role. He also worked out on mannerisms and body language. Guru surprised audience with his amazing range of acting and gained popularity with this single hit.

 

Seeing his tremendous performance in the debut film, Mani ratnam gave him a brief role in ‘Kadal’. He left Koothu-P-Pattarai and concentrated on his film career. He also made a brief appearance in Malayalam anthology film – 5 Sundarikal. He also acted in a Tamil anthology film - Bench Talkies - The First Bench, where he acted in the segment - "The Lost Paradise". Thoongaa Vanam and Kohinoor are his latest releases.
