Gundappa Viswanath Biography 
Gundappa Viswanath is a former cricketer of Indian cricket team. He was one of India's finest batsmen throughout the 1970s and has played test cricket for Indian team from 1969 to 1983. He has played 91 matches for India and scored valuable 6080 runs with an average of 41.93. His innings include – 14 centuries and 35 half centuries. He has also taken a single wicket throughout his cricket career. He has batted for India in 25 ODIs scoring a total of just below 500. He scored two half centuries also, his highest score being 75.
Viswanath made his entry to cricket grand by scoring a century in the debut match. The match was against Australia at Kanpur in 1969 which resulted in a draw. He has scored 14 centuries throughout the career and in none of these matches, India has lost. There have been outstanding performances of this great Indian batsman in difficult pitches though they have never resulted in centuries, yet proved to be the match winning innings for Indian side. He played beautifully against Australia and West Indies during middle 1970’s, the peak time of his career. His match against West Indies at Chennai in 1974–75 where he scored 97 not out is the best instance.
In 1975–76, Viswanath’s 112 against West Indies helped India to reach the target of 403, which was a record at that time. He was the highest run chaser of India during late 1970’s. He led Indian team as a captain for two matches against England in 1979-1980. He lost one of those matches while the second one was drawn. Viswanath retired from Tests in 1983. He has also served as a match referee for the ICC from 1999 to 2004. He is married to Kavita, sister of Sunil Gavaskar. His name surely lists in the top 10 Indian batsmen all time.
