Gudavalli Ramabrahmam Biography

Gudavalli Ramabrahmam was a Telugu filmmaker and screenwriter in the pre-independent era of early talkies. He was a film producer too, who was predominantly associated with Telugu cinema. He was one of the successful Telugu directors of early talkies, who gave successful social dramas such as Mala Pilla (1938) and Raithu Bidda (1939). He also co-directed the film Palnati Yudham. Illalu (1940), Apavaadhu (1941), Pathni (1942), Panthulamma (1943), and Mayalokam (1945) are a few more works as a film director. He founded the film production company Saaradhi Chitra, and has also served as an editor for a few regional magazines.

Gudavalli Ramabrahmam was born on 24 June 1902 in Nandamuru, Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh. Gudavalli Venkayya and Baapamma were his parents. He completed his Intermediate education at National College in Bandar in the year 1918. He married Saradhamba at the age of 18. He was a reputed person in the society then, who handled a few more roles, not only cinema & entertainment. He became the Chairman of Andhra Farmers Meeting organizing committee in 1931, followed by secretary of Andhra Nataka Parishathu in 1934. He also worked as an editor of a magazine in Chennai before he forayed to films.

He founded the film production company Saaradhi Chitra, and became active in film scene. He produced and directed many social dramas in the 1930s and created a niche of his own. In 1945, he served as chairman for South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce. Started his film career as a producer, he marked his directorial debut with Draupadi Vasthrapharanam, and the movie was produced under his banner. He died on 1 October 1946 aged only 44. He was fully active in the industry till his death.
