Gayatri Asokan Biography

Gayatri Asokan is a leading playback singer of Malayalam at present. She is well trained in Bhajans, Hindustani music and ghazals also. She also composes music for albums and jingles. In 2003, she won Kerala State Film Award for best female playback for the song, Enthe Nee Kanna of the movie, Sasneham Sumitra. In 2007, she won Art of Living award for Outstanding Women Achievers. As a playback singer, other popular songs of Gayatri include - Deena Dayalo Rama of Arayannangalude veedu, Thirike Njan of Arabi katha, Enthe nee thannilla of Yes your Honour, Mazhaneer of 5 Sundarikal, Ninviral Thumbil of Beautiful, Kadhayile Rajakumaranum of Kalyana raman, Chanjadi Aadi of Makalkku, Pularumo of Ritu, Thamara Noolinaal of Mullavalliyum thenmaavum and Kannin vaathil chaarathe of Mulla. A devotee of Ravishankar, Gayathri is an active participant in Art of Living's Satsangs all over the world.

 

Gayatri was born on March 3, 1978 in Thrissur in a doctor family to Dr. P. U Asokan and Dr. Sunidhi. She was interested most in Hindustani music than Carnatic. Her ‘inspiration’ to take up Hindustani Classical music was Hariharan. Her initial lessons in classical music was given by Ramesh Narayan, Hindustani vocalist. She took MA in English literature. She was a member of Western band called ‘Kalinga’ during her college days. She got training in Hindustani music from Hindustani musician Alka Marulkar for 3 years. Now she is learning Thumri and Ghazals from Shubha Joshi, an accomplished singer of Hindustani Classical music.

 

She debut singing field with classical number - Deena Dayalo Rama of Arayannangalude veedu in year 2000. Music was composed by Raveendran. She performs live in many stage concerts and has performed for established sabhas like Thyagaraja Sabha, Bharatham and "Soorya Festival". Her albums include - Anahata- Art of Living, Neeyum Nilavum, Chants for workplaces - Kedar Pandit, Ghazals by Umbayi, Iniyennum and Pranayathhin Ormakal.
