Raveendran Biography

Raveendran is the most versatile music director of Malayalam cinema in the modern age. His contributions to Mollywood have given some landmark movies to Malayalam cinema and his unexpected death resulted in a void that’s never going to fill up again. Vadakkumnathan (2006) can be regarded as his master piece and the movie was released after his death. His combination with K.J.Yesudas has given numerous precious germs to Malayalam cinema. His milestone movies include – Panchagni, His highness Abdullah, Thenum vayambum, Rajasilpi, Amaram, Aaram thampuran, Bharatham, Nandanam, Choola, Geetham, Sukhamo Devi, Neelakkadambu, Mainakam, Geetham, Chiriyo Chiri, Kizhakkunarum Pakshi, Thammil Thammil, Mazhayethum Munpe, Venkalam, Champakulam Thachan, Kadinjool Kalyanam, Yuvajanotsavam, Belt mathai, Attakalasam, Marikunnilla Njan,laal salam, Uncle Bun, Kuttettan,  Ganamela, Oru Abhibhashakante Case Diary, Oru May Masa Pulariyil, Kalabham, Ey auto, Pallavur Devanarayanan, Mizhi randilum, Kanmadam, Mazha, Kamaladalam, Abhimanyu, Ayirappara, Arayannangalude Veedu, Vishnu, Dhanam, Soorya gayathri and Ayal Kadha Ezhuthukayanu.

 

He has given music to many blockbuster hits of Mohan Lal like Vadakkum Nathan, Uncle Bun, Panchagni, His highness Abdullah, Rajasilpi, Sukhamo Devi, Ey auto, Bharatham, Yuvajanotsavam, Attakalasam, Vishnu, Dhanam, Abhimanyu, Aaram thampuran, Chiriyo Chiri, Kanmadam, Kamala dalam, Kizhakkunarum Pakshi, Soorya gayathri and Ayal Kadha Ezhuthukayanu. He has worked with almost all leading film directors of Malayalam during 80’s and 90’s. Till his death he was busy with his music composition. He has composed for about 150 movies of Malayalam.

 

Raveendran was born in Kulathupuzha and Kulathupuzha Ravi was his birth name. Raveendran joined the Swathi Thirunal College of Music in Thiruvananthapuram and famous playback singer K.J.Yesudas was his classmate. He has sung a few songs for Malayalam during his struggling period with the name Kulathupuzha Ravi, yet struggled to get opportunities. ‘Parvanarajanithan’ from a Malayalam film, Velliyazhcha was his debut movie as singer. He even worked as a dubbing artist and artist in orchestra too. His decision to stop singing and start music direction turned out to be the worth decision he made. His contributions to Malayalam cinema are really commendable and his talent has only grown and matured as years passed by.

 

He debut as music director with Thenum vayambum in 1981 and his compositions echoed Carnatic music in its perfection. All his compositions are purely based on ragas and he used only Indian instruments for orchestra. He has won Kerala state awards and Special Jury national award for Bharatham. Nandanam gave him the second state award. He won Asianet film awards for Vadakkumnathan.
