Gauri Ayyub Biography 
Gauri Ayyub was an Indian writer born in Patna. She was also a social worker, activist and teacher based in Kolkata. She is best known for her translations and short stories. She also wrote many columns on social and political topics. Her husband Abu Sayeed Ayyub was a philosopher and literary critic. Tuchcha Kichu Sukh Dukkha, Door Prodesher Sankirno Path, Ei je Ahana etc are some of her notable works. She studied philosophy at Visva-Bharati University, Shantiniketan. She lived during the period, February 13, 1931 - July 13, 1998. She died in Kolkata.
Gauri Ayyub was born in Patna, Bihar on February 13, 1931. Her father Dhirendra Mohan Datta was a teacher, writer and philosopher. He was a Gandhian too. Her mother, Nirupama Datta was a businesswoman. Though she was born in Patna, her ancestors are from East Pakistan, now called Bangladesh. In 1947 she completed her school studies with first rank in the state. After intermediate she enrolled at Patna University. She was arrested for her involvement in an anti-imperialist student movement. A couple of days spent in jail made an influence in her life. Later she continued her studies at Shantiniketan, Kolkata. She completed her graduation in Philosophy in 1952.
During her academic years she loved Abu Sayeed Ayyub, her teacher who was 25 years older to her. She later married him and settled in Kolkata. She completed a teachers' training degree in 1953 and also her Master’s degree before she started her professional career in teaching. She also got involved with social work while at Kolkata. Apart from regular writings, she also collaborated with her husband for two translation works.
