Gargi Banerji Biography

Gargi Banerji is a former Indian female cricketer who was a member of India’s National team. She made her international debut at the age of 14 at the Eden Gardens in a World Cup match against England and played her last match against the same team in 1986. She served as the Right-hand batswoman and Right-arm medium fast bowler for her team. In April 2017, she was given honorary life membership of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

 

Banerji made her international debut even before turning 15, and that too in the prestigious World Cup. Six years down the line, she played her first Test where she scored a half century in the second innings. Eventually, she ended up representing India in 26 ODIs and 12 Tests. She scored a total of 614 test runs and 409 ODI runs with an average of 27.90 and 15.73 runs respectively. As a woman cricketer she faced a lot of hardships, an era when woman game was not so popular. Over the years she has been associated with Indian cricket in various capacities. She served as chairperson of Indian women’s cricket team selection committee during a time period of 2011 - 2014.

 

Gargi Banerji was born on 20 July 1963 in Kolkata, West Bengal. She was a mischievous girl and an avid sports lover during her younger days. While she was a member of Young Women Christian Association, she played badminton, basketball and football, and later she enrolled for the cricket trial at YWCA. Thus she got an opportunity for cricket coaching in 1976 which proved to be a turning point of her life. She received full support from her family as well, to pursue a career in the field of cricket.  She played for clubs those days and international cricket too resembled an amateur form.
