Ganthimathi Biography 
Ganthimathi was a veteran actress of Tamil cinema, known for portraying character roles. She shot to fame playing Sridevi’s mother in Pathinaaru Vayathinile. Excelled by donning various kinds of character roles, she has given life to more than 500 Tamil films. Amman Kovil Vasalile, Karakattakaran, Walter Vetrivel, Kadhal Oviyam, Kumbakarai Thangaiah, Chinna Thambi Periya Thambi, Agal Vilakku, Aan Azhagan, Manickam, Amaidhi Padai, Anbu Thozhi, Athai Magal Rathiname, Chidambara Rahasiyam, Man Vasanai, Muthu and Thavasi are only a few among the numerous memorable roles she played onscreen. She has also excelled in negative shaded roles and has appeared in popular television series. She was also a theatre artist.
Ganthimathi was born in 1945/1946 in Manamadurai of Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu. She has performed as a child artist and even as a heroine in a couple of films. She started her film journey as a child artist at the age of only 11. She had a strong theatric background and known for delivering dialogues in ‘vattara vazhakku' (local dialect). She mostly portrayed village lady and mother roles. She has played mother to almost all leading actors of Tamil cinema. A much dedicated artist, her performance bore a stamp of authenticity, irrespective of the character she portrays.
16 Vayathinile was one among the major roles she played onscreen. Other noted roles include - Mann Vasanai, Muthu and Karagattakaran. She is a recipient of Kalaimamani Award by the Government of Tamil Nadu for her outstanding contributions to Tamil cinema and theatre. She passed away on September 9, 2011 after a prolonged illness, aged 65. She is survived by her two adopted sons. Associated with Tamil cinema since 1965, she was last seen in Kamal Hassan starrer Virumaandi, released in 2004.
