Fatafat Jayalaxmi Biography

Fatafat Jayalaxmi was a south Indian actress who was active in the industry during 1970s and early 1980s. She has appeared in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films. The actress was in a steady relationship with nephew of M. G. Ramachandran. She committed suicide in 1980 and many of her films were released posthumously. Her suicide was attributed to love failure and even perhaps financial woes. She hanged herself from the ceiling over an alleged failed romance. She used screen name ‘Supriya’ for her first few movies. The tag – Fatafat was added to her name following her hit dialogue Fatafat for her debut Tamil film - Aval Oru Thodar Kathai.

 

Her real name is Jayalakshmi Reddy, born in Andhra Pradesh in 1952. She made her film debut with talented director A. Vincent’s Malayalam movie, Theerthayathra (1972) with screen name Supriya. In the movie she played the supporting role of Parvathy Kutty and the movie starred Madhu and Sharada in lead roles. The following year she appeared in a supporting role in Ithu Manushyano?

 

In 1974, she made her Tamil debut through K Balachander’s film Aval Oru Thodar Kathai. She played the supporting role of Chandra in this movie and she used her real name Jayalakshmi for her Tamil debut. She acted aside Sujatha, Vijayakumar, Kamal Hassan and Sripriya for the movie and the movie was a silver jubilee hit. Her popular dialogue ‘Fatafat’ became an instant hit and since then Fatafat tag got permanently added to her name. In her short life time she starred with top actors of her time and some of her noted movies are - Aval Oru Thodar Kathai, Anthuleni Katha, Aarilirunthu Arubathu Varai and Mullum Malarum. She committed suicide in 1980 aged only 22.
