Easwari Rao Biography

Easwari Rao is a south Indian film actress who works in all the four main south Indian languages. Started her career in the early 1990s, she mostly played supporting roles onscreen. Most recently she was seen playing the role of Selvi, character Kaala’s wife in Rajinikanth starrer Kaala, where the megastar appeared in titular role. Her character earned praises from critics and was noticed. The movie marked her comeback to Tamil cinema, after a break of almost one decade. She got her first major break in Raman Abdullah (1997), and Guru Paarvai, Appu etc are some of her major roles in Tamil. Currently she is mostly associated with Telugu cinema playing supporting roles. She also appears in Tamil and Telugu television shows.

Originally a native of Rajahmundry, she was born in Peddapuram of East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh. Vyjayanthi is her other name. She is married to director L. Raja. Currently she is settled in Chennai for the last 30 years, busy with her entertainment career. Her first film, Kavithai Paadum Alaigal (1990) made in Tamil language never got released. She played lead role in her debut release, followed by 4 more films and left Telugu industry when she got only supporting roles. Throughout 1990s, she appeared in different south Indian language films in character roles, and earned the first break through Raman Abdullah. For the past few years she has been selective and for the same reason rejected many projects. She portrayed Prasanth’s sister in Appu.

In 2017 she played her first comic role in almost 2 decades of her film career. In the Telugu movie titled Nenu Local, she played Nani's mother. 2002 film, Virumbugiren earned her Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Character Artiste (Female) award. She also appeared in TV serials - Kokila Enge Pogiraal, Kasthuri, Aval Appadithan, Ninne pelladutha, Agni Saatchi, Vazhnthu kaatukiren and Maya belonging to Tamil and Telugu languages.
