Doddarange Gowda Biography

Doddarange Gowda is a Kannada poet, who writes songs for Kannada language films too. He worked as Kannada professor till his retirement. In 2018, he was awarded with the civilian award Padma Shri for his outstanding contributions to the field of Kannada poetry. He is also associated with Bharatiya Janata Party. He published many of his works as poetry collections and also released CDs and audio cassettes for the same. He has written dialogues for more than 10 films and has been the screenwriter for over 100 television soaps and serials.

 

In 1972, he received Karnataka Sahitya Akademi Award for Poetry for his work, Kannu Naalage Kadalu. He is a recipient of Karnataka State Film Award for Best Lyricist thrice. He won the award for the first time in 1991 for the movie, Ganeshana Maduve, followed by Kavya in 1996 and Janumada Jodi the following year. He remained a prominent Kannada lyricist of 1990s, and some of his most popular film songs as a lyricist include - Sri Rama Bandavne of Paduvaaralli Pandavaru, Tera Yeri Ambaradaage and Notadaage Nageya Meeti of Parasangada Gendethimma, Nammoora Mandara Hoove of Aalemane etc. He penned more than 500 Kannada songs for movies.

 

Doddarange Gowda was born on 7 February 1946 in Madhugiri TQ of Tumkur District of present day Karnataka state. His college studies were completed at Bangalore where he took BA and master’s degree. After completing his studies, he started his career as a college lecturer and retired as professor and principal of SLN College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Bangalore after 44 years of service. Most recently a film ‘Halli Sogadu’ was dedicated to the 70th birthday of this very popular lyricist.
