Devanand Konwar Biography

Devanand Konwar is a senior politician of Indian National Congress party who has served as the governor of three Indian states. He served as the Governor of West Bengal during 14 December 2009 – 23 January 2010, Governor of Bihar during 29 June 2009 – 21 March 2013, followed by Governor of Tripura during 25 March 2013 – 29 June 2014. Konwar is an educationist-lawyer-turned-politician and is the first person from the northeastern region to assume office of the governor of that state, when he became the governor of Tripura. He succeeded D.Y. Patil, who was then shifted to Bihar.

 

Devanand Konwar was born in the year 1943. He studied from University of Delhi and Gawahati University. After studies, he took up the profession of teaching. He taught English at Cotton College, Guwahati for some time and then worked in American Standard Vacuum Oil Company in Mumbai in 1961 as Marketing Manager. He was associated with the company for 7 years before he switched his profession to education field once again. He established Guwahati College in 1968 and remained as its founder principal. In November 1969 he joined Gawahati High Court Bar, and served as an advocate till 1991. He served as government advocate to many north-east states also.

 

His association with politics and Congress party began in 1955, during his academic years. He has held different positions inside the party, though he has never been elected to state assembly or parliament. He was appointed as Governor of Bihar on 29 June 2009, a post he held till 2013 before he was shifted to Tripura. He was also given an additional charge of West Bengal for a few days in December 2009.
