Devan Biography

Devan is one of the successful ‘charming villains’ of Malayalam screen. Though known for his good looks, he came to be known through his negative roles. He has also been successful in doing character and supporting roles. Also known as ‘Navarasa villain’ of south Indian cinem, Devan loves to play sophisticated and stylish villain onscreen. Apart from Malayalam, he has also acted in Tamil and Telugu movies and he is an active politician as well.

 

He is the son-in-law of legendary film director Ramu Kariat, who made classic Chemmeen. His notable roles as a villain include –Ekalavyan, Bhadra Chiitaa, Baasha, and Indraprasdham. Yet he is known for portraying positive roles – both in lead role as well as supporting roles like Oru minnaminunginte nurungu vettam, Simon Peter ninakku vendi, Aaranyakam, Oozham etc. Currently he portrays character roles with comic touch, the recent releases being Emmanuel, Mannar Mathai Speaking 2 and Gulumaal: The Escape.

 

He was born in 1952 to Sreenivasan and Lalitha. His real dream was to work in army, but landed in government job. He was chased by a producer at Spencers Plaza in Chennai which later prompted him to join movies. He started his career with the flop movie, Vellam in the 1970’s though the movie was termed as technically brilliant by film critics. He mostly appeared in supporting roles in the 1980’s and later on moved to lead actor as well as negative roles. In many of his early films, he was seen with a beard. To give a handsome new look to villain roles, he cleared off his beard. At present, Devan is also leading the Kerala People's Party.
