Deepu Karunakaran Biography

Deepu Karunakaran is a film director from Thiruvananthapuram, who directed the successful Malayalam films - Crazy Gopalan, Winter, Crazy Gopalan, Fireman and Karinkunnam 6S. All these works, made on different themes got noticed and were successful at box office. He is the younger brother of actress Suchitra Murali, a prominent name in Malayalam cinema in the early 1990s. Deepu worked as an assistant director under Priyadarshan for many years before making his first full-fledged film in 2008. Though Winter was his first film, the movie got delayed and his second film, Crazy Gopalan got the first theatric release.

Deepu Karunakaran was born in Thiruvananthapuram on 13 July 1977 to Karunakaran and Usha. He has two sisters. His elder sister Suchitra is already established heroine of Malayalam cinema, known for 1990s hits such as No.20 Madras Mail, Kuttettan, Abhimanyu etc. Suchitra is two years elder to Deepu. Following his sister’s footsteps, Deepu too reached film industry. He worked as assistant director to Priyadarshan before marking his film debut in 2008. His first project was a horror thriller, Winter starring Jayaram and Bhavana. But his first theatric release was Crazy Gopalan, a comedy entertainer with Dileep playing the titular role.

In 2011, he followed the success streak of comedy films with Teja Bhai & Family starring Prithviraj and Suraj Venjaramoodu. The family entertainer was a big box office hit. The director always experimented with different genres of movies, from horror thriller to comedy entertainers, his next release was a disaster thriller - Fireman, starring Mammootty. The movie opened to critics’ acclaim and was a box office hit. His recent release is a sports film based on football match, and the movie starred Manju Warrier and Anoop Menon in lead roles.
