Debasish Mohanty Biography

Debashish Mohanty is a former Indian cricketer best known as one of the finest wicket-taking fast bowlers of Indian National Team in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He had an outstanding career record in limited over matches, in terms of no. of wickets taken in each match. Mohanty was known for taking several priceless wickets at crucial points for team India in ODIs, thus changing the swift of the match. He also owns an excellent career record in domestic cricket. Before his retirement from all forms of cricket in December 2010, he took   417 wickets in 117 first-class matches and 160 in 129 List A matches. He played 45 ODI and 2 test matches for team India claiming 57 and 4 wickets respectively.

 

Playing for East Zone in a Dileep Trophy match against South Zone at Bir Bikram College Stadium in Agartala in the year 1999, he claimed all the 10 wickets which included the wickets of Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and many leading players. In fact during his career peak in the year 1999, his bowling action was used for the official graphical logo of the World Cup Tournament 1999, for his unique bowling style. After retirement he has been a successful coach and currently employed at NALCO, Bhubaneswar.

 

He was born on 20 July 1976 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. After associated with first class matches, he joined Indian National team in the year 1997 and played till 2001. He was one of the highest wicket taking bowlers for team India in the late 1990s, and he was the opening bowler for many times for team India, aside Venkatesh Prasad. He also managed to reach the top-20 list of ICC ODI World Rankings in 1999. However with the return of Ajit Agarkar to the team, he got only fewer opportunities to play for India. He played his last ODI match in the early 2000s. He played domestic cricket with Odisha and East Zone.
