Chitra Iyer Biography

Chitra Iyer is a renowned singer of present times. She is known as a vocalist, pop singer, playback singer as well as a live performer on stage. She anchors programs on Indian television and a well known artist too. As a playback singer she has worked for south Indian movies as well as Bollywood. She has also appeared in a few music videos as well as movies. Now she is a successful television actress and reality show judge also. ‘Kungumapoovu’ television serial of Asianet made her a popular actress. Her association with Balabhaskar in Malayalam fusion albums is quite popular. She has played supporting roles in Malayalam movies – Makara manju and Ratri mazha.

Chitra was born in an Iyer family as the daughter of Raja Durai and Rohini Iyer. Music was her passion since early childhood and started learning Carnatic music at a younger age. Later she had formal training in Hindustani music from Sri Mukund Kshirsagar of Gwalior Gharana, who was a student of Pt Jasraj. Chitra recorded her first album in 1984 for the music director Chandru, an album that consists of Mookambika bhajans. She recorded her first album in the year 1993 that was again a devotional album - on Udipi Krishna. She composed its songs as well.

Chitra debut as a playback singer in the year 1997 singing for music duo of Malayalam, Bernie and Ignatious. Later she associated with budding talent, fusion composer, Balabhaskar to do many albums and music videos that became quite successful. It was during this time when she emerged as a stage performer and star anchor to conduct many music programs for Kairali and other Malayalam channels. She has also performed live in many foreign countries.

Her first Tamil playback song was for the movie, Tenali, music composed by A. R. Rahman. The song was Athini-Chitini. She has also sung both the versions (Tamil and Telugu) of Ale Ale song of Boys and Asathura Asathura of Enakku 20 Unakku 18 for Rahman. Her top Malayalam songs are Ishtamilleda of Swapnakoodu and Chundath of Chronic bachelor.
