Chekannur Maulavi Biography

Chekannur Maulavi’s full name is Chekannur P. K. Mohammed Abdul Hassan Maulavi. He was a progressive Islamic cleric from Malappuram, who devoted a lifetime to research and spoke out what be believed to be the Quranic truth. He published 17 books and has written several manuscripts. Though many of this thoughts and speeches were controversial, they were thought provoking and known for the unconventional interpretation of Islam based on Quran. It invited a lot of enemies as well. Unfortunately he went missing on 29 July 1993 under mysterious circumstances. Though great efforts were made from government’s side, he was not found and is believed to be dead or murdered!!! One of the most sensational cases of Kerala in the 1990s, its mystery is still to be unfolded.

 

He was born in 1936 in Edappal, Malappuram. He was very religious and studied Islamic theology and Arabic during his younger days. He became a religious teacher at the age of 24. His revolutionary ideas have always gained public attention and had followed a pattern of resigning from jobs in religious institutions whenever he feels Quran principles are violated. He was a traditionalist historian who radically opposed many Islamic customs and practices practised in the society. He published 17 books. Communal Harmony – is his last published one. He started Malayalam translation of the Quran, which remained incomplete.

 

He believed that Quran is the only revealed book which people should revere and Hadith written by many could not be taken for granted, which brought him troubles. He even claimed that narrations by Abu Hurairah were corrupt. Khur'aan Sunnath Society was started by his followers who believed in his principle.

 

Moulavi was last seen on 29 July 1993. In his wife’s words, two unidentified persons came to their home to invite him for a speech. After that no one has seen him! Though an investigation was launched which drew media and public attention a lot, nothing was traced about his whereabouts. Maulavi’s wife fought for justice for years. After a series of investigations that lasted for more than 15 years, CBI special court in Kochi on September 30, 2010 gave a double sentence to V V Hamsa, the prime accused of the murder. The remaining 8 accused were acquitted which include the controversial Muslim leader, Kanthapuram A. P. Aboobacker Musalyar. It was later concluded that Maulavi was murdered, his dead body was disposed without any traces.
