Chaturbhuj Doshi Biography

Chaturbhuj Doshi was a famous screenwriter and director, who laid foundation to Gujarati film industry. Doshi is regarded as one of the leading artists who played a significant role in the establishment of Gujarati film industry. He has also directed movies in Hindi. Prior to his film entry he has been a leading journalist. As a filmmaker he is best known for directing the films Gunsundari (1948) and Nanand Bhojai (1948) in Gujarati language. His debut movie - Gorakh Aya (1938) and a social comedy, The Secretary (1938) are among his early noted hits.

 

His full name is Chaturbhuj Anandji Doshi, born in 1894 in Kathiawar, Gujarat. He completed graduation from University of Bombay and started his professional career as a journalist. He first worked with Hindustan (1926) and three years he entered the silent era of cinema in association with Ranjit Movietone. He wrote scripts and screenplays before he moved to direction in 1938 with the film, Gorakh Aya which turned out to be a box office hit. But its screenplay was written by Gunvantrai Acharya and dialogues by P. L. Santoshi. It was followed by the success of The Secretary the same year and this comedy starred Trilok Kapoor and Charlie in the pivot roles. Gyan Dutt composed music for both these films.

 

Since then he directed many movies in Gujarati language, apart from a few Hindi-Gujarati bilingual. Musafir (1940), Bhakta Surdas (1942), Maheman (1942) etc are some of his early hits. With the milestone films Gunsundari (1948) and Nanand Bhojai (1948), Doshi played a pivot role in establishing Gujarati film industry. His career was at its peak in the late 1940s. Jesal Toral (1948) based on folklore was a major success.
