Bommireddy Narasimha Reddy Biography

Bommireddy Narasimha Reddy, popularly known as B. N. Reddy was a producer and director of earliest Telugu film industry. For his contributions to Telugu cinema, Indian government appreciated him with Dadasaheb Phalke Award in the year 1974. Apart from producer and director, he was also a script and story writer. He was a businessman and had run many hospitals as well.

 

Bommireddy Narasimha Reddy was born on November 16, 1908 in Kadappa. He was eldest of the three brothers, B. Nagi Reddy, B. N. Konda Reddy and himself. B. Nagi Reddy was a Telugu movie producer who set up then Asia's biggest film studio at Chennai, Vijaya Vauhini Studios. He is also famous for producing landmark Hindi movies like Julie and Ram aur Shyam. Thus both brothers were associated with film field the same way. Most surprising fact is that they are among those rare siblings who are fortunate enough to get highest prestigious award in Indian cinema – Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the other being Mangeshkar sisters, Lata and Asha.

 

As a film director his big movie is always regarded as Malliswari released in the year 1951. Other movies are Vandematharam (1939), Sumangali, Devatha, Swargaseema, Bangaru Papa, Bhagya Rekha, Raja Makutam, Poojaphalam, Rangula Ratnam and Bangaru Panjaram. His successful story/screenplays are - Vandematharam, Sumangali, Swargaseema, Bangaru Papa, Bhagya Rekha and Raja Makutam. He has produced a few movies as well - Gruhalakshmi (1938), Vande Mataram (1939), Sumangali (1940), Devatha (1941), Bhakta Potana (1942), Swargaseema (1945) and Yogi Vemana (1947).    

 

In 1955, he won President's Silver Medal for Best Feature Film in Telugu for the movie - Bangaru Papa. In 1957 he won Certificate of Merit for Best Feature Film in Telugu for Bhagya Rekha. In 1966, he received National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu for the movie - Rangula Ratnam. He was the first Indian film personality, to receive the Padmabhushan and the Doctor of Letters honor.
