Bishnuram Medhi Biography 
Bishnuram Medhi was an Indian politician and freedom-fighter from the state of Assam. He served as the 2nd Chief Minister of Assam during 9 August 1950 – 27 December 1957. He was a member of Indian National Congress. He also served as the Governor of Madras State during 1958 – 1964. He participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement and served as Joint-Secretary of the Reception Committee of the Pandu session of the Indian National Congress in 1926. Bishnuram also served as a minister in Gopinath Bordoloi's cabinet. Medhi lived during the period, 24 April 1888 – 21 January 1981.
Bishnuram Medhi was born on 24 April 1888 in Hajo, Assam as the son of Sonaram and Alehi. He was born into a poor family of peasants. He was a brilliant student in studies and completed his matriculation in 1905. Later he studied at Presidency College, Kolkata and Dhaka University, where he specialized in organic chemistry. Later he pursued law. As a freedom fighter, he was associated with Non-Cooperation Movement. He also joined Indian National Congress in the 1920s. He became President of the Assam Provincial Congress in 1930. As a social worker and activist, he gave some major contributions in establishing separate statehood of Assam, and avoided its merging with East Bengal/Pakistan.
In the 1930 he was most active in politics and also served as a minister in Gopinath Bordoloi's cabinet. He rose to prominence in the 1940s as a Congress politician, who was appointed as 2nd Chief Minister of Assam on 9 August 1950, while state formation was going on. He was strictly disciplined and also advocated for strong action against the rebelling Nagas. He died on 21 January 1981 at the age of 92. He was married but didn’t have any children.
