Binod Bihari Chowdhury Biography

Binod Bihari Chowdhury was a noted revolutionary and freedom fighter from Bengal, mostly known for his participation in Chittagong Armoury Raid. He was one of the last survivors associated with Chittagong Armoury Raid and he took his last breath in 2013 at the age of 102. He in the company of revolutionaries - Surya Sen, Preetilata Waddedar, Kalpana Dutta, Kalipada Chakrabarty, Ambika Chakrabarty, Makhan Ghoshal and Tarakeshwar Dastidar, barely 20 years old, when he took part in the Armoury Raid. Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker was based on this historic freedom struggle movement. He was honoured with the Independence Day Award, the highest civilian award in Bangladesh in 2000.

 

He was born in Uttarvurshi village of Chittagong district in 1911. His father, Kamini Kumar Chowdhury was a lawyer in Chittagong and he was born as his fifth child. He completed his primary education from Fatikchhari Upazila and completed graduation in 1934. Later he completed Masters and Law too while serving his prison life. He joined the revolutionary group of Bengal - Jugantar in 1927 while doing his matriculation. When Surya Sen executed the plan of Chittagong Armoury Raid, he was one among them who attacked the armoury. The group was also able to liberate Chittagong for the next four days. Many of its members were captured and Surya Sen too witnessed a torturing death by British. Bihari was wounded in the battle against British and he was sent to Duly Detention Camp in Rajputana. It was during this time when he completed his studies.

 

Once got released, he was appointed as Assistant General Secretary of the Chittagong district committee of Indian National Congress in 1939. After Indian independence, Chittagong became a part of East Pakistan. Yet Binod preferred to stay in India itself, where he spent his rest life. Though he never joined politics, he was associated with many movements in Bangladesh.
