Binayak Sen Biography

Binayak Sen is an Indian pediatrician and public health specialist from Bengal, best known as an activist. He is the national Vice-President of the People's Union for Civil Liberties and is a member of the policy group for Police Reforms of Aam Aadmi Party. An activist he is a recipient of many prestigious awards such as Jonathan Mann Award, the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights, and the Gandhi International Peace Award. Sen is known for his stand for noble causes and establishment of hospitals giving treatment to poor in less cost. He currently resides in Raipur. In 2010 he was accused of helping Naxalites to set up a network for which he was given a life term imprisonment. He has appealed before the Chhattisgarh High Court and the case is in pending stage.

 

A Bengali, he was born in the year in 1950. He completed schooling from Calcutta Boys' School, Kolkata and graduated in MBBS from Christian Medical College, Vellore. Sen came to Chhattisgarh in 1981 where he worked at Dalli Rajhara for next 6-7 years. He played a pivot role in establishing Shaheed Hospital, giving low cost treatment and medicines to poor. Sen is a member of the Peoples' Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) since 1981. The organization aims at preservation of constitutional civil liberties and human rights. Sen has protested against cases of human rights abuse through PUCL.

 

In 2008 he told in an interview that he never approves the violent methods of naxalities. He also spoke strongly against them at several times. He also opposed the violent activities conducted by Salwa Judum. In 2007 he was arrested on the charges of acting as a conduit between jailed Naxalite leader Narayan Sanyal and businessman Piyush Guha. He was also accused of links with naxals. In 2008 when Jonathan Mann Award was announced, 22 Nobel laureates from around the world wrote to Indian government to allow Sen to travel to US to receive the award for Global Health and Human Rights.
