Bharat Rangachary Biography

Bharat Rangachary was a film director associated with Bollywood. He was active in the eras of 1980s and 1990s, and met with a premature death in 1995. Before starting his career as an independent director of Bollywood, he worked as an assistant director under the highly acclaimed Bollywood director Hrishikesh Mukherjee since mid-1970s. Zameen Aasmaan, Baat Ban Jaye, Waqt Hamara Hai and Takkar are some of his successful films as a film director. He died 10 days before the release of his last Bollywood flick – Takkar (1995) starring Sunil Shetty, Sonali Bandre and Naseeruddin Shah in lead roles. The film did average business at box office, and regarded as one of the best movies of its lead pair.

 

He was born in Mumbai on May 1, 1953. He started off his film journey in the 1970s, working as an assistant director under ace filmmaker, Hrishikesh Mukherjee since 1975. He worked as second unit director (assistant director) of some of the iconic movies of second half of 1970s directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, such as Chupke Chupke and Golmaal. He was the associate director of cult classic comedy – Golmaal and also Mili, Jurmana, Naram Garam, Khoobusurat and Bahurani, all directed by Mukherjee. Chaitali, Kotwal Saab and Aalap are other movies as an assistant director. He was an executive producer of Naram Garam.

 

He marked his career as an independent director in the year 1984. The movie was Zameen Aasmaan, starring Sanjay Dutt, Shashi Kapoor, Rekha and Anita Raj. The movie did good business at box office and music composed by Rahul Dev Burman got noticed. Baat Ban Jaye in 1986 was his last release, followed by Khatarnaak, Zulm Ki Hukumat, Waqt Hamara Hai, Hanste Khelte and Takkar. He also wrote the story of 1996 hit film, Tere Mere Sapne, which launched many newcomers to the industry like Arshad Warsi, Priya Gill, Simran and Chandrachur Singh. Bharat Rangachary died of cancer in 1995. Mrs Rangachary soon committed suicide and their kids were forgotten by Bollywood industry!
