Bertha Gyndykes Dkhar Biography

Bertha Gyndykes Dkhar is a visually impaired Indian educationist from Shillong, Meghalaya. She invented the braille code in Khasi, an Austroasiatic language spoken primarily in Meghalaya state. For her contributions towards the field of education, Government of India honoured her with the fourth highest civilian honour - Padma Shri in 2010. She is also a recipient of National Award for Child Welfare for her efforts to encourage and promote voluntary efforts for the cause of children. She currently serves as the principal of Jyoti Sroat School, which teaches both normal and visually challenged kids.

 

Bertha Gyndykes Dkhar was born in Shillong, Meghalaya. She was born as a visually challenged child suffering from retinitis pigmentosa. Born with falling eye sight, she lost her vision completely while studying at college. After that she was forced to discontinue her studies. Born into a poor family, she sold fruits in the market for a living. In the losses, she found her purpose for life. She started her research works in Braille code, so that her efforts can help visually challenged people of her state. As Khasi was the local language spoken in her state, she decided to work on it and finally developed the braille code, benefitting hundreds of students.

 

Now more than a hundred blind students can read and write in their mother tongue. She also serves as the principal of school dedicated to for visually challenged kids. She also educates others blessed with normal vision. The school has around 185 students and is up to Class X. She believes separate schools for the blind is not the answer, and accommodating them with normal kids can help them easier to assimilate them in the mainstream.
