B. S. Ranga Biography

Bindiganavile Srinivas Iyengar Ranga, best known as B. S. Ranga was an Indian photographer. He was also a filmmaker and actor who owned Vikram Studios. Associated with south Indian cinema, he made some notable films in three south Indian languages except Malayalam. He was also a cinematographer, actor and screenwriter. He was one of the leading names of early talkies in 1940s and he has produced and directed many movies since then.

 

B. S. Ranga was born in village Magadi of Mysore state, Karnataka. Since young he was inclined towards arts and also got opportunity to interact with some of the leading personalities of this era. Magadi in his teens, and by the age of 17 he had self-taught the art of photography. He conducted an exhibition at London at this age. Some of his works were exhibited at the Royal Salon in London. He was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. Later he moved to Mumbai where he worked as an assistant under cameraman and laboratory technician, Krishna Gopal.

 

Ranga owned 5 decades of glorious film career. For his own and other producers’ work, he has taken the assignments of cinematographer, director, producer, laboratory owner, studio owner, exhibitor and script-writer. He worked in different roles for his own company as well as others. He has also done the camera work of old Hindi classics such as Mohabbat Ki Jeet, Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya etc. His production company, Vikram Productions came into prominence in the 1960s and 1970s and has won many awards for quality content and good actors. Tenali Ramakrishna in Telugu and Amarshilpi Jakkanachari, the first colour movie produced in Kannada are among his best works.
