Ashok Amritraj Biography

Ashok Amritraj is a veteran Hollywood producer, born and brought up in Chennai, India. He is a former tour professional tennis player, who has represented India at Wimbledon and French Open in the 1970s and early 1980s. He currently serves as the chairman and CEO of Hyde Park Entertainment. He is the CEO of National Geographic Films also. Amritraj lives in Los Angeles with his wife Chitra and 2 children.

Ashok was born in Chennai in 1956. Both his brothers - Vijay Amritraj and Anand Amritraj, are accomplished tennis players who have played Davis Cup Final in 1987. Ashok started off his career as a sportsman, a professional tennis player. Ashok has represented India on an international level in the 1970s and 1980s and has been qualified to French Open in 1974 and Wimbledon in 1980. He reached third round of US Open in 1977. He played both singles and doubles for India. He had a professional career of long 9 years.

Later he moved into film production, mostly Hollywood and has delivered many hits. Started off as an executive producer in the 1980s, he financed numerous movies in the 1990s and 2000s. Amritraj has produced over 100 films, grossing an excess of 2 billion dollars worldwide. Antitrust, Walking Tall, and Bringing Down the House are some of his Hollywood films. He also financed Aishwarya Rai starrer Tamil film – Jeans in 1998. The movie was noticed for a song sequence which featured all the seven wonders aside the Bollywood queen. Mandrake the Magician and The Phantom are his upcoming ventures. Amritraj is often thought of as an “unofficial ambassador” for India in Hollywood.
