Anubha Gupta Biography

Anubha Gupta was a film actress and singer associated with Bengali cinema in the 1950s and 1960s. She was married to Bengali film actor, Rabi Ghosh. Gupta mostly played supporting roles on screen, and was seen in Satyajit Ray in Abhijan and Kanchanjangha in character roles. Her role as Anima in Kanchanjangh (1962) got noticed. She had an early death in 1972 aged only 42, and later her husband Rabi Ghosh married Baisakhi Devi in 1982. Apart from films, she was also associated with theater, and she handled both these professions with ease.

 

Anubha Gupta was born in the year 1930 in Dinajpur, British India. Now her birth place belongs to Bangladesh. Since childhood days she was interested in art forms like music and dance. Her schooling was done at Charan Girls School and Shantiniketan. She was introduced to film scene by music director Robin Chatterjee as a playback singer, and later she gained recognition as an actress too. When she entered films in the 1940s, the cinema had just started to become popular among the masses, and it was the era of singing actors too.

 

As a film actress, she marked her film debut with 1949 Bengali film, Samarpan. Within 5 years, she became a very familiar face in the Bengali film industry. By 1950s and 1960s, she rose to prominence. Ratna Dip, Kabi, Hansuli Baanker Upokatha, Abhijan, Parineeta, Champadangar Bou, Kabya and Kanchanjangha are some of her major film roles in Bengali cinema. She was first married to footballer Anil De. Later she married noted theater artist and comedian, Rabi Ghosh. They remained in wedlock till her death in 1972 due to of cerebral hemorrhage. She was active in film industry till her death.
