Anjana Bhowmick Biography

Anjana Bhowmick, also known as Arati Bhowmik is an actress of Bengali cinema who worked from the 1960s until the 1980s. A prominent Bengali actress of the 1960s and 1970s, she was one of the top heroines of Bengali super star Uttam Kumar. The successful pair gave major Bengali hits like “Chowringhee”, “Thana Theke Aschhi”, "Kokhono Megh", “Shukh Sari”, "Nayika Sambad", "Roudra Chhaya", "Raj Drohi" etc. It was a time when film critics commented that she won’t be successful without Uttam Kumar. She proved it wrong through the highly acclaimed movie - "Mahashweta” where she starred opposite Soumitra Chattopadhyay. Both her daughters - Nilanjana Sharma and Chandana Sharma are actresses. Noted Bengali actor Jishu Sen Gupta is her son-in-law.

She was born in 1944 in Cooch Behar, West Bengal. After completing her school education from Suniti Academy of Cooch Behar in 1961, she also studied in Sorojini Naidu College. She made her film debut at the age of 20 in the 1964 film "Anustup Chanda". She received her first break to films from Pijush Bose. She used the screen name Arati for her early movies, though she changed it later. Got noticed with her first film, she gained recognition within a short period. As an actress she received appreciation from both critics and audience, right from her debut film. She worked with Uttam Kumar in 7 movies.  

She got married to Anil Sharma, Navy Officer and the couple currently resides in Mumbai. The couple has two daughters and both are into the acting field.  Her daughters are Nilanjana Sharma and Chandana Sharma. Nilanjana Sharma is married to Jishu Sen Gupta, a popular Bengali Actor. With the late 1980s she retired from films.
