Anil Mehta Biography

Anil Mehta is a highly acclaimed and successful cinematographer associated with Bollywood. Hum dil de chuke sanam in 1999 starring Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai in pivot roles is his best known work. This colourful movie gave him National award for best cinematography for the year 1999. He is also known for directing the comeback movie of Madhuri Dixit in 2007 – Aaja Nachle, though the movie proved to be a disaster. 2014 release – Highway is his latest well appreciated work. Khamoshi: The Musical (1996), Lagaan (2001), Saathiya (2002), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Veer-Zaara (2004), Marigold (2005), Salaam-E-Ishq (2005), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), Wake Up Sid (2009), Rockstar (2010), Cocktail (2011) and Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) are his best works up-to-date. He has been associated with leading film makers like Yash Chopra, Ashutosh Gowariker, Sanjay Leela Bansali, Nikhil Advani and Shaad Ali.

 

He completed his school education from Scindia School, Gwalior and completed graduation in commerce from Hindu College, Delhi University. He joined prestigious FTII, Pune in 1979 to study cinematography till 1983. After that he came to Mumbai in 1984. He worked as an assistant under Barun Mukherjee and his first independent work was with Chandita Mukherjee. It was a docuemnatry series in 1989 - Bharat Ki Chhap/The Identity of India, when he shot one of its episodes. Fearless: The Hunterwali Story and The Cloud Door are his nest two works for television.

 

Highly acclaimed, Khamoshi in 1996 was his first big break to Bollywood. The movie marked the debut of film director Sanjay Leela Bansali as well. The director gave him the next movie in Bollywood as well – Hum dil de chuke sanam which bagged him a National award. He wrote the script of one Bollywood movie – Agni Varsha in 2002.
