Anil Kumar (businessman) Biography

Anil Kumar is an Indian businessman and entrepreneur from Chennai who is the Co-Founder of a business school, Indian School of Business. He was a co-founder of the consulting firm McKinsey & Company’s offices in Silicon Valley and India, and remained senior partner and director at management of the mother firm, with which he was associated since 1986. He also set up two outsourcing companies - Knowledge Process Outsourcing and Business Process Outsourcing. Kumar co-founded the Indian School of Business with Gupta in 1997. Today’s it’s listed among top 15 business schools in the world by The Financial Times.

The former director McKinsey & Company has pleaded guilty to fraud charges in the largest insider trading case in the United States' history in the year 2010, admitting that he got $1 million for giving secret information to its alleged ringleader Raj Rajaratnam. He along with his colleague and friend Rajaratnam met in the 1980s while they were both at the same business school, conspired to engage in insider trading. When he was caught he was at his career peak, in terms of his influence in business world.

Anil Kumar was born in Chennai in 1958. He graduated first in his class from The Doon School, and graduated from IIT Mumbai with a degree in mechanical engineering. Later Kumar attended Imperial College at the University of London, followed by business school at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, before beginning his bright career in the field of business. Kumar began his career at Hewlett Packard as a product manager. He joined McKinsey and Company in 1986. He was a senior partner and one of the most senior employees and brightest stars of McKinsey. He co-founded McKinsey's offices in Silicon Valley and India, branching the business to new horizons.
