Amiya Kumar Mallick Biography

Amiya Kumar Mallick is an Indian athlete and sprinter who holds the 100 metres national record of 10.26 seconds. The record was earlier jointly held by Anil Kumar Prakash (2005) and Abdul Najeeb Qureshi (2010), with a time of 10.30 seconds. His major achievements in athletics include - silver medal in 100 metres at the 2006 Junior Asian Meet in Colombo and bronze in 200 metres at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games. In 2011, he suffered a left quadricep injury which left him bed-ridden for six months, and his comeback was far behind all predictions. At the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, he was disqualified from the 100 metres semi-finals because of a false start.

 

India’s fastest man, Mallick was born on 14 November 1992 in Olansh, Cuttack district, Orissa. His father works in education department of state government. His mother is a housewife. Mallick is currently pursuing his MBA studies. His sister is doing Bachelor in Technology at a private engineering college in Bhubaneswar. The family stays in state capital. Mallick came to spotlight for the first time, after winning the silver medal in 100 metres at the 2006 Junior Asian Meet in Colombo. He repeated success and received a bronze in 200 metres at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games, clocking 21.33 seconds. Following a left quadricep injury in October 2011, he was out of fields till December 2012.

 

He won gold medal at the National Open Athletics Championships at Ranchi in 2013 by recording 21.22 seconds. It brought him to limelight once again. Mallick’s dream came true when the world famous Racers Track Club, founded by Mills at Jamaica, accepted his request to train him. Glen Mills, had earlier coached Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake.
