Aghore Nath Gupta Biography

Aghore Nath Gupta was a scholar of Buddhism in the 19th century and a preacher of the Brahmo Samaj. He was designated Sadhu after his premature death in recognition of his pious life. He was born at Shantipur in Nadia in 1841 as the son of Jadab Chandra Roy Kabibhusan. He passed away in the year 1881 at a younger age of 40, after leading a Sadhu’s life.

He lost his father at the age of 12. His primary education was done at traditional centres of education, the tols and pathasalas. Later he joined Sanskrit college to learn Sanskrit. Deeply influenced by Debendranath Tagore and Keshub Chunder Sen, he joined the Brahmo movement. He was initiated into the Brahmo movement by his fellow-villager Vijay Krishna Goswami. He was a strict vegetarian in his personal life and devoted much of his time to prayers. Aghore Nath married a child widow of a different caste in 1863.

He started Brahmo Samaj in Dhaka in 1857. He started a Brahmo School there in 1863 and joined the school as a missionary teacher where he stayed for 10 months. During this period the two brothers Kali Mohan Das and Durga Mohan Das visited Dhaka and delivered speeches. Keshub Chunder Sen visited Dhaka in 1865. In his earlier days, Aghore Nath was a missionary of the Adi Samaj. He was the first Brahmo missionary to venture into Assam in 1870 and has also spread ideas of Brahmoism in Orissa and Punjab.

With the second schism of the Brahmo Samaj in 1878, and the formation of the Navavidhan in 1869 he was ordained as an apostle of the New Dispensation for the Punjab in 1881. However he died under tragic circumstances the same year. He was afflicted with diabetes, a killer disease then.
